repeatedly characterized a terror attack against the u.s. consulate in benghazi as a protest gone wrong. a statement from the white house maintains her comments were based on intelligence she had at the time. rice explained why it was she and not secretary clinton answering those tough questions on national tv. >> why was it you that sunday morning? of all the people in government, why the u.s. ambassador to the united nations answering questions on the attack. >> it wasn't that usual. i've done shows in the past. secretary clinton had been asked by most of the networks to go on. she had an incredibly gruelling week dealing with the protests around the middle east and north africa that enveloped our embassies. she had to deal with the loss of our four colleagues in benghazi. and console the whole state department, greet the families and the bodies. and she declined to do it. and i was asked by the white house if i would do it as the next senior american diplomat. we were talking about a range of issues that week. it wasn't just benghazi as you'll recall. it was a broad spectrum of forei

's no question there was politics at play here by republicans who were really, really angry about benghazi, and she illustrated that, but it was more than that. it was also personality driven, because democrats even think she is very smart and capable but maybe doesn't have the personality for the job. >> gloria, i heard you say earlier that you think ambassador rice underestimated the club. what did you mean by that? >> right. that was from a democrat very close to the white house. she said the club is really important on capitol hill. john kerry is the leader in that club, john mccain likes him an awful lot and would clearly go along with that nomination. also, when she traveled up there and she wanted to go up there to talk to these senators, there is a sense from the source that she kind of overestimated her ability to woo them over on the question of benghazi. that was a really big pre-existing condition for her, and dana just pointed out, she didn't win over susan collins, who was quite important to her. >> and david, i mean, what do you make of this? is this just a sign of how parti

clear from as soon as the controversy over benghazi, the comments began that it wasn't going to happen? >> i don't think this is just about partisanship. and i don't think it is just good benghazi. that was an issue of course. but in this case, there are a number of senators on both sides to the aisle that believe the united states has tough work ahead in international relations. someone has to negotiate with the iranians to make sure we don't get into a conflict there and sbhn a toughness and authority of a jim baker and frankly, there was a sense about susan rice that even though she is very talented and i think she did a generous thing today by withdrawing, she really was loyal to her president by him doing that. but there was also a sense that she didn't have the weight. she didn't have the background that senator kerry does. and he is extremely schooled and knows the rough parts of the world. there was a sense in the senate that people there would just be more comfortable with him representing the united states. >> david, what do you think this says about president obama himself.

was not. i was talking about benghazi. >> you do not use the word immigration. >> it came up a little bit. it came up in the following way. people wanted to know that the president cared about the issue. they wanted to understand not -- why it had not been achieved in his first term. this served almost the same function i view, that of a threshold issue. if they are ok on immigration, they will listen to the rest of it. if you're not, they will not listen to the rest of it. but not think it is fully the problem. it served a little bit in this anecdotal evidence derived from interviews. it was an issue. it was almost a euro can this issue. >> alphonso. what did you do on your thoughts and vacation? i know you organize an independent television ad campaign in nevada. explain to us what that means. how does that word? how does it work? what did the election but like stick to your personal experience and then we will broaden it out. >> the great thing is that it is independent. i'm not here to defend the romney campaign. we realized we needed to do something different. the latino vote would b
